Red
The original color of the transmission fluid is red. In addition, the fluid is translucent. This is how you want the transmission fluid to look at all times. The transmission fluid serves two purposes. It acts as a lubricant to protect the transmission and also as a hydraulic fluid to help shift gears. Red transmission fluid that is see-through is in excellent condition.
Orange
The reason why the transmission fluid will change from red to orange is that it is getting older. This is a natural transition. In fact, the transmission fluid can also turn light brown when it is getting older. In this case, provided the fluid is still translucent, you can still leave the fluid in the transmission. It is still in good condition.
Brown
When the transmission fluid has turned brown, it is oxidizing. What this means is that the fluid is getting air bubbles in it. Unfortunately, these bubbles can actually damage the transmission. As such, it is crucial that you have the fluid changed if it is brown.
Black
If you ignore changing the transmission fluid, it will continue to oxidize and turn black. It will also become completely opaque. Now, the transmission fluid is damaging the transmission. In fact, you may start to have transmission problems when you drive your automobile.
Pink
Finally, the reason why transmission fluid turns pink is that it gets diluted by engine coolant. This happens if you have a breach between the two systems. Unfortunately, you cannot drive your automobile with pain transmission fluid. If you do, you can damage the transmission beyond repair.
