Can I Do Car Repairs Myself?

Taking your car into the mechanic can be pricey, and can be frustrating, especially if the problem seems like it would be a quick fix. And while some car maintenance can be easier for an amatuer to figure out, attempting to DIY bigger repairs to your car with no experience can have disastrous outcomes. But there are some repairs that can be done at home with some basic knowledge and parts handy.

Replace a Headlight or Tail Light

Replacing a headlight or tail light is probably the easiest maintenance service you can do, and doesn’t involve anything under the hood of your car. Smart car owners regularly inspect the lights on their car to be sure nothing is out so they can keep themselves and other motorists safe on the roads, and to avoid traffic tickets. If one or more of your lights aren’t working properly, you can take the light out and bring it into an auto supply shop so you can find the bulb that will fit your vehicle. These lights will usually cost about $50 per bulb, and are a relatively quick fix.

Replace Your Old Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are another quick repair that doesn’t involve anything under the hood of your ride. On most cars, the old windshield wipers will slide off, allowing you to perform an easy replacement. If you go to an auto supply shop, or go to the auto section of a larger department store, you might be able to ask an employee for suggestions on what wiper blades will best fit your car and climate, or be able to find a reference manual. Most of the time, you will be on your own when it comes to figuring out what might be best for your vehicle, so be sure to do thorough research before attempting to DIY any replacement or minor repairs on your ride.

If it’s Under the Hood, Leave it to the Professionals

While there are some repairs and replacements that can seem simple enough for an amatuer to pull off, it’s always best to see a certified, trained mechanic to be sure that the job is done right, and to answer any questions about what parts are best suited for your ride. For the best repairs and replacement parts around, come see the team at RSW Auto Repair, and we’ll get you back on the road in no time!
